SUMMARY

To supervise and coordinate switch crews in the movement and placement of railroad equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees the work assigned to the crew ensuring that it is completed in a safe and efficient manner.
  •  Communicates frequently with the yard coordinator reporting the progress of the crew's work.
  •  Trains new employees on procedures and policies.
  •  Plan and direct movement of rail cars.
  •  Coordinate the movements with plant facility personnel to provide required service.
  •  Interprets railroad signals, rules and regulations, following safety regulations and switching schedule.
  •  Observes track to detect obstructions or defects.
  •  Prepares reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
  •  Lubricates moving parts of locomotive.
  •  Ability to handle railroad equipment in a safe manner using manually operated brakes.
  •  Must wear required personal protective equipment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises 2 or less employees.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; providing performance input.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School education or GED preferred; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  

May be required to work nights, holidays and weekends.

This position is located in the Freeport, TX area.

Salary Range for this position is $16.00 to $18.00 per hour.
